Romanian President appoints new ministers, puts end to political crisis

22 February 2019

Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis on February 21 appointed by decree the two minister candidates nominated by prime minister Viorica Dancila, putting an end to the silent political crisis that started in November 2018.

President Iohannis had previously rejected four times the candidates nominated repeatedly by PM Dancila. Eventually, Dancila replaced the nominations.

"We made these new nominations to put an end to the deadlock in the Government's activity, especially since the interim period at the two ministries expired. Regional development and transport are two key areas,” PM Dancila said.

Upon their nomination, Vasile-Daniel Suciu will serve as minister of regional development and deputy PM and Alexandru-Răzvan Cuc will serve as minister of transport.

Răzvan Cuc (37), the new transport minister, also held this position in the cabinet of Sorin Grindeanu (2017) and Mihai Tudose (2017). He was harshly criticized, even in his own party, for not having completed any major infrastructure project in his mandate, Hotnews.ro commented.

Daniel Suciu, to serve as as deputy prime minister and minister of development, has previously served as head of the PSD caucus in the Chamber of Deputies. The 39-year-old PSD MP worked as a journalist for several years before moving to a political career.
