The German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Romania on Tuesday after an official trip to Bulgaria yesterday. On her first official visit to Romania, Merkel will meet Romanian president Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Emil Boc. She will also visit the Babes- Bolyai university in Cluj, where she will receive the Doctor Honors Causa title. Merkel will also attend the inauguration of the German Studies Institute at the Babes- Bolyai university.

Romania and Germany celebrated 130 years of diplomatic relations this year. Trade between Romania and Germany reached EUR 1.94 billion at the end of February this year, according to Agerpres, up 10 percent on the same period of last year. Romania exported EUR 904 million of products and services to Germany while imports were of EUR 1 billion.

Germany is the second largest source of foreign companies in Romania, after Italy, with 17,500 companies registered in Romania.
