How important is tourism in Romania’s economy?

02 November 2015

Romania had 32,500 companies which were active in the hotel and restaurant industry at the end of 2014, with a total turnover of EUR 2.6 billion.

Their number represents over 5% of the total number of companies in Romania, but their turnover amounts to 1% of the total economy.

In Brasov, which is one of the most developed counties in Romania in terms of tourism, the hotels and restaurants have a share of only 1.5% of the total economy, said Sorin Ionescu, founder of Fivestar Hospitality, cited by local Ziarul Financiar. In several counties, the tourism’s share is below 1%.

In counties like Ilfov, Valcea or Buzau, the hotel and restaurant sector is almost nonexistent. In Constanta, which has several sea resorts, tourism has a share of only 2% in the county’s total business.
