Former Piatra-Neamt mayor gets eight-year prison sentence

Former Piatra-Neamt mayor and PDL leader Gheorghe Stefan received a court sentence of eight years and two months in prison in a criminal case involving the Romanian Post, where Stefan is charged with influence peddling, money laundering and abuse of office.

The decision can be appealed, reports local Europafm.ro.

The court also ordered the confiscation of over EUR 128,000 from the former mayor.

At the beginning of January this year, Stefan was sentenced to three years in prison in another case on illegally obtaining money for his party. The former deputy chairman of PDL admitted that he had used his position to get illegal money for the party.

In October 2016, Stefan received another six years in prison in the Microsoft IT licenses case.
