Strong fire at paint factory in small Romanian city

A strong fire at a paint factory in Orasie, a small city in the central-western part of Romania, left one person severely wounded and four people intoxicated with smoke.

The fire broke out yesterday afternoon, most likely after an explosion. It spread across the four-floor plant on a 5,000 sqm area.

The firemen’s intervention has been extremely difficult so they called support crews from the nearby Sibiu, Alba and Gorj counties. Authorities also activated the alarm system for the population in Orastie. Some 300 people living in the apartment buildings closest to the factory were evicted.

The plant is located at the town’s outskirts, about 700 meters from the residential area.

The wounded person was taken to the hospital, with four-degree burns.
