Eurowind Energy reportedly planning EUR 450 mln large-scale wind farm in northeastern Romania
Danish energy giant Eurowind Energy is reportedly preparing an investment of approximately EUR 450 million in a large-scale wind farm in Iași County, eastern Romania, according to local publication Apix.ro.
The project concerns a park located in Movileni commune, currently in the final stage of permitting. The investment will be carried out through Wind Asset, which already holds the technical connection approval to the National Energy System, obtained in August 2025. According to the documentation reviewed by Apix, the project includes the installation of 40 Vestas wind turbines, connected through an underground network of approximately 32 kilometers.
The wind farm will have an installed capacity of 288 MW, and the estimated annual production ranges between 630,000 and 757,000 MWh, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 350,000-420,000 households. The energy produced will not directly supply Iași County, but will be injected into the National Energy System, without the project including battery storage systems at this stage.
In addition to the turbines, the investment involves the development of extensive infrastructure. Nearly 15 kilometers of new roads will be built, while another approximately 17 kilometers of existing roads will be modernized. The project also includes the construction of a 33/110 kV transformer station and a 110/220 kV station, which will later be handed over to Transelectrica.
The turbines intended for the new park are new-generation Vestas, with individual capacities of 7.2 MW. Thirty of them will be the V172 model, with a 172-meter rotor and a maximum height of approximately 252 meters, while another ten will be the V162 model, with a 162-meter rotor and a height of about 221 meters. The estimated lifespan of one turbine is 35 years.
The new park will benefit from the wind potential of the Moldavian Plain, where the open terrain and average wind speeds allow for the efficient exploitation of renewable energy. After obtaining the permits, the works are expected to be carried out over three years.
The documentation also showed, however, that three of the turbines are set to be located less than 500 meters from built-up areas, the closest being only 253 meters from the boundary of Movileni village. In these cases, the investor will have to conduct additional analyses regarding noise and the shadow flicker effect produced by the turbine blades, and if legal limits are exceeded, the authorities may impose operational restrictions or even require changes to the locations.
The project comes after Eurowind achieved a significant strengthening of its financial capacity. In April 2026, Blackstone Infrastructure, part of the massive US fund Blackstone, announced that it would invest up to EUR 2 billion in the Danish group, initially acquiring a 24.7% stake, a transaction that is still undergoing approval. The company’s founders and the Danish group Norlys will remain the majority shareholders.
Eurowind Energy has been active in Romania since 2011 and currently operates approximately 184 MW, including a 60 MW storage facility in Teiuș.
