Chevron withdraws from shale gas activities in Romania

21 February 2015

American oil and gas company Chevron recently said it is quitting its shale gas concessions in Romania, after making a similar decision for Poland. Romania was Chevron’s last shale gas project in Europe.

The company did not say why it was giving up its Romanian operations.  The announcement was made by a Chevron spokesman, quoted by Wall Street Journal.

Last year, Prime Minister Victor Ponta was announcing the controversies around shale gas exploration in Romania would end, as the country does not seem to have shale gas. Chevron however never confirmed the PM's statements.

Back then, the company said it was still analyzing the information it obtained from the first exploration drill in Northeastern Romania. Setting up the drill at Silistea Pungesti triggered local and national protests back in 2014, as it did in other countries where Chevron started fracking operations.
