France has reached a compromise with Germany over the statute of the offshore natural gas pipelines that voids the objections of Romania and other East European countries and gives the latter the right to negotiate and regulate the North Stream 2 project.
The two EU countries have agreed to ensure oversight will come from the "territory and territorial sea of the member state where the first interconnection point is located," which is Germany in the case of the German-Russian project. France traded the North Stream 2 for a common EU budgetary and indebtedness policy, likely to be endorsed soon, US magazine Forbes quoted by Profit.ro commented.
The two countries submitted their common position to the Romanian EU Presidency, which disclosed the agreement on Twitter and formally informed all the 28 EU members, on February 8. The compromise reached on Friday, which is not legally binding until approved by the European Parliament, was backed by every member state except Bulgaria, according to Deutsche Welle.
