Romania’s state road company urged to get directly involved in building motorways

The head of Romania's ruling coalition, Liviu Dragnea, said he was disappointed with the pace of the motorway projects assigned to private, mostly foreign, contractors, and asked the state road company CNAIR to seriously consider the option of building highways itself.

"I asked the transport minister to ask the company to seriously consider to what extent and how quickly it could start working on its own, including on motorway projects. For too long, large companies have been making much money on claims [while not delivering motorways]," the leader of Social Democratic Party (PSD) said in a press conference at Târgu Jiu, local Hotnews.ro reported.

He accused the private firms of continuing to challenge procedures and delay works.

"I hope the new transport minister will move quickly in this direction. We have money, we have a desire, we have a plan, there are projects, they just need to be done quickly," Dragnea said. The same should be done for railway infrastructure projects, he added.
