Bucharest City Hall plans to allot more money for mammoth cathedral

23 July 2018

The Bucharest City Hall plans to allot another RON 10 million (EUR 2.15 million) of its budget to the Redemption Cathedral, the biggest religious building in Romania, Ziarul Financiar reported.

The municipality has included this new allotment in a budget revision that needs to be approved by the Bucharest City Council. The City Hall has already paid RON 15 million (EUR 3.22 million) for this cathedral, which should be inaugurated at the end of November, just before Romania’s 100th anniversary.

The Bucharest City Hall also plans to pay another RON 18 million (EUR 3.87 million) for construction work and repairs at 166 other churches in Bucharest. The total sum the municipality will spend on religious buildings this year will thus increase to RON 63 million (EUR 13.55 million).

Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea is a strong supporter of the Orthodox Church. She and her husband, Voluntari mayor Florentin Pandele, also organize one of the biggest pilgrimages in Romania.
