And Romania’s nomination for next year’s Oscars is…

Aferim

The historical movie Aferim! by Radu Jude was nominated to represent Romania in the competition for next year’s Oscar award for best movie in a foreign language, Romania’s National Cinematography Center (CNC) announced on Tuesday.

The jury had to choose from a total of 14 movies this year, including other popular titles such as Corneliu Porumboiu’s Comoara/The Treasure and Tudor Giurgiu’s De ce eu?/Why Me?

Aferim! is placed in XIX century Wallachia (Tara Romaneasca) and tells the story of a tax collector and his son in their quest to find a runaway slave.

The movie brought Radu Jude the Silver Bear for best director award at this year’s Berlinale.
