Over 100 asylum seekers caught while trying to leave Romania illegally

24 April 2017

Romanian border police officers have caught a group of 111 asylum seekers who were trying to leave Romania illegally, hidden in a truck. The truck was registered in Romania, the driver being a 40-year-old Romanian.

The incident occurred on Friday, April 21. The 111 people were from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, all of them asylum seekers in Romania.

During custom checks, the police officers found them hidden in the truck. Following further investigations, they discovered that 76 of them were Iraqi citizens, 15 were Syrians, nine were Iranians, eight were citizens of Afghanistan, two were Indians, and one was Pakistani. They were aged between two and 53.

The driver told the police that he has no idea how those people got inside the truck, as he had stopped in several parking lots along the way. Meanwhile, the migrants said that they were trying to get to the Schengen Area, and they decided to try to get there this way because they didn’t have the necessary visas.

The police are now investigating both the asylum seekers and the driver.
