Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu (picture, left) and her Taiwanese teammate Hsieh Su-wei won the Ladies Open Biel Bienne doubles final in Switzerland. They defeated the Swiss duo made of Timea Bacsinszky and Martina Hingis 5-7, 6-3, 10-7, in one hour and 45 minutes. For this win, Niculescu and Su-wei got 280 points in the WTA doubles ranking and USD 12,300. The tournament offered total money prizes of over USD 226,000. Monica Niculescu is the third best-ranked Romanian in the WTA ranking of the top women’s tennis players in the world. She is at number 47, with 1,145 points. Simona Halep is the best-ranked Romanian player (5th), followed by Irina-Camelia Begu (33rd). In the doubles ranking, Monica Niculescu is the best-ranked Romanian female player – 23rd. Romania has two other players in the top 100, namely Raluca Olaru at number 53, and Andreea Mitu at 86.
