Romania expels Russian diplomat as part of EU answer to Salisbury attack

27 March 2018

Romania’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has notified the Russian Embassy to Bucharest that one of its diplomats will be declared a persona non-grata and will have to leave Romania.

Romania thus joins 13 other EU countries that have decided to expel Russian diplomats after the Salisbury attack in the UK.

On March 4, former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were poisoned with a nerve gas in Salisbury, England. British PM Theresa May accused Russia of being behind this attack and political leaders in the European Union decided to support UK’s decision and to join the diplomatic sanctions against Russia. The US also announced it would expel 60 Russian diplomats in response to the Salisbury attack.

Russia said the diplomatic sanctions against it were wrong and unfounded and that it would have a “symmetrical reaction”.
