Romania beat Great Britain in their Fed Cup World Group II play-off tie at Mamaia, after local star Simona Halep pulled a good match against Britain’s number one Johanna Konta and Irina Begu beat Heather Watson, on Sunday, April 23.

After the first day, Romania and Great Britain were level, 1-1, after Halep beat Watson and Konta defeated Romanian Sorana Cirstea. The Romanian team also lost their captain on day 1, after former tennis legend Ilie Nastase’s unsportsmanlike behavior towards the umpire and opponents.

The Romanians, however, didn’t lose their motivation and managed to win their matches on Sunday. Simona Halep, who’s currently fifth in the WTA ranking of the best women’s tennis players in the world, beat Konta (7 WTA) in two sets ended 6-3, 6-2.

Irina Begu then closed the tie for Romania with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Heather Watson.

Romania thus remains in Fed Cup’s World Group II.
