Music to my ears: concerts in Romania in 2017

Concert goers in Romania have had plenty of events to choose from in recent years, as many international names made the country a stop in their world tours. The list of concerts announced so far for this year seems to follow the same trend, either with individual concerts or at local festivals. A selection below.

Jethro Tull performed by Ian Anderson

February 19, 25

The music of British rock band Jethro Tull will be heard in Timișoara and Bucharest.

Kenny Garrett

February 23, 25

Grammy winner post-bop jazz saxophonist Kenny Garret returns to Romania with his Quintet for two concerts, in Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca.

Richard Clayderman

March 6 - March 10

French pianist Richard Clayderman returns to Romania for a tour that will take him to five cities across the country, Bucharest included.

Glenn Miller Orchestra

March 11

Originally established by Glenn Miller in 1938, the orchestra will perform in Bucharest under the direction of Will Salden.

Pink Martini and Storm Large

April 20

The Oregon-based “little orchestra” known for their genre crossing music, from classical and Latin to jazz and classic pop, will perform in Bucharest alongside lead vocalist Storm Large.

Gregory Porter

April 24

Bucharest is where Porter’s first concert in Romania will take place, allowing fans an encounter with the Grammy award winning American singer, songwriter and actor.

Diego el Cigala

May 9

Dubbed “the Sinatra of flamenco”, the two-time Grammy award winner and holder of five Latin Grammy nominations will perform in Bucharest.

Deep Purple

May 13

The legendary English rock band brings to Bucharest their The Long Goodbye tour promoting the band’s latest album inFinite.

Al Di Meola - World Sinfonia

May 20

Jazz fusion and Latin jazz guitar player and composer will perform in Bucharest his pieces, but also those of Piazzolla and Lennon-McCartney.

Evanescence

June 29

American rock band Evanescence, winner of two Grammy awards, will perform at Arenele Romane in Bucharest.

Electric Castle Festival

July 12 – July 16

More than 120,000 people gathered last year at the Banffy Castle in Bontida, Cluj county, where the festival takes place, braving rain and mud to listen to their favorite artists. This year’s lineup includes alt-J, Moderat, Nero, Noisia, Architects, Dixon, DJ Sneak, Ame, Metrik, Etherwood, Soom T, Axel Thesleff, and Crazy P Soundsystem.

Depeche Mode

July 23

After a long-awaited 2013 Bucharest concert that attracted 45,000 fans, the band returns to Romania for a concert in Cluj-Napoca.

Untold Festival

August 3 – August 7

Romania’s biggest electronic music festival (pictured) sold its first 11,000 passes for the 2017 edition within minutes of going on sale. The lineup for this year’s edition hasn’t been announced yet but the previous edition brought the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, and Hardwell to Cluj.

Summer Well

August 12, 13

The festival takes place close to Bucharest, at the Știrbey Domain in Buftea. Five bands are expected to perform each day. Past years' lineups included Hurts, The Chemical Brothers and Years and Years.

Balkanik! Festival

September 8 – September 10

The world music festival takes place each year at the Uranus Garden in Bucharest.
