Cluj Airport announces expansion works for passenger terminal

21 June 2023

Cluj -Napoca's Avram Iancu International Airport recently announced the start of construction works for the expansion of the North side passenger departure terminal through an investment of RON 365.7 million (EUR 73.7 million).

"The implementation of the new project involves expanding the departure terminal by approximately 7,200 square meters and the aircraft parking platform by nearly 9,000 square meters. The new spaces will be equipped with state-of-the-art C3 standard security devices, and two boarding gates for international flights and one boarding gate for domestic flights will be built. Upon completion of the works, the management of passenger flow during peak hours, especially busy time intervals, will be optimized. In the new configuration, the expanded departure terminal and parking platform will meet the needs of the growing passenger traffic and the expected increase in the number of flights for the upcoming period," according to a press release issued by the Cluj airport and cited by Agerpres.

The European Union co-finances the expansion of the terminal with RON 129.6 million.

"The expansion of the terminal will increase the passenger and baggage processing capacity and contribute to reducing the time required for check-in formalities, security checks, and border document control. It is a very important project considering that in 2023 we will exceed 3 million passengers, and we anticipate increases in passenger traffic in the following years as well. Since the beginning of the year, Cluj International Airport has recorded approximately 1.3 million passengers, which is 11% more than the same period in 2019 and about 47% more than last year," said David Ciceo, general director of Cluj International Airport.

The implementation period for the project "Expansion of the North Side Passenger Departure Terminal" is 24 months, from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2023.
