Cinemas, theaters and opera halls in Romania could reopen starting September 15, culture minister Bogdan Gheorghiu told Hotnews.ro on Tuesday evening, August 25.

He added that the decision to reopen cinemas and theaters will be taken based on the number of COVID-19 cases in each county.

"We will propose, following Germany’s model, a regionalized opening, depending on the number of COVID-19 cases in each county. The imposed restrictions, harsher or more relaxed, will depend on the epidemiological situation in each county," the culture minister said.

In counties with low numbers of COVID-19 infections, the cinemas and theaters could be allowed to work at full capacity while maintaining sanitary measures such as disinfecting the spaces after each show.

In counties with moderate number of infections, the cinemas and theaters could operate a 50% to 66% of their capacity. However, in counties with high numbers of infections, cinemas and theaters could remain closed.

The minister said, however, that the final decision will also take into consideration the epidemiologists’ recommendations.
