Insurance companies active in Romania recorded gross premiums in the amount of RON 10.14 billion (EUR 2.2 billion) in 2018, up 4.5% compared to the value registered in the previous year, according to a report of the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF).
The general insurance segment generated RON 8.04 billion (EUR 1.72 bln) of gross premiums in 2018, up 4.6% year-on-year, and the life insurance segment amounted to RON 2.1 billion (EUR 450 million), 4.3% more than in 2017.
At the end of 2018, 29 insurance companies were operating in Romania, out of which 16 were active on both segments, seven were active on life insurance segment alone, and six on the non-life segment alone. Overall, the market leader was City Insurance (14.6% of the gross premiums), followed by Allianz Tiriac (13.0%), and Omniasig VIG (11.6%).
