Investors in renewable energy warn about side effects of land sale ban in Romania

The draft law that restricts the sale and use of agricultural land, passed by the Romanian Parliament, will hinder the planned investments in renewable energy projects, the two associations of renewable energy producers, PATRES and RWEA, warned in a letter to president Klaus Iohannis, Economica.net reported.

The ruling Liberal Party (PNL) and Save Romania Union (USR) referred the law to the Constitutional Court, but the court rejected the objections, and president Iohannis is supposed to promulgate it.

The law includes a series of restrictions for the purchase of agricultural land. Thus, the seller's relatives, neighbors, and the land renters have preemptive rights on agricultural land put up for sale.

The land's destination cannot be changed, so it can only be used for agriculture, under another provision of the law.
