Bucharest Floreasca Hospital manager resigns after doctors’ extreme protest

01 September 2016

The interim manager of the Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest, Sorin Paun, resigned on Wednesday evening, August 31, after 17 doctors from the hospital’s emergency unit SMURD-UPU announced their resignations earlier that day.

The doctors justified their extreme protest invoking serious communication problems with the hospital’s manager as well as administrative problems, such as the lack of drugs.

Health minister Vlad Voiculescu went to talk to the doctors and the hospital’s manager on Wednesday evening. First he met the doctors who informed him of the problems within the hospital.

“There are two kind of problems, some objective and others subjective. I understand there have been problems with the availability of some drugs, but I understand that the problems have been solved. I think the communication problems have led to this situation,” Voiculescu said after the meeting.

Then, he went to meet the hospital manager, Sorin Paun, who handed in his resignation. The health minister said he would appoint a new interim manager until a contest for filling this position will be organized in October.

“Beyond the communication problems between doctor Sorin Paun and a part of the hospital’s personnel, nobody brought to my attention any elements to shed doubt over his honesty and qualities as a surgeon,” Voiculescu said, according to Mediafax.

The health minister also promised he would help the Floreasca Hospital to rapidly solve this problem. The hospital is one of the most important in Bucharest.
