Six medals for Romania at the Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad in Russia

Romania’s team won six medals, two of which were gold, at the 50th Mendeleev International Chemistry Olympiad organized in Moscow between May 1 and May 8.

Andrei Iliescu from the International Informatics High School in Bucharest and Paul Haidu-Gerea from the Mircea cel Batran National College in Constanta won gold medals at the Olympiad. Andrei Iliescu also won gold at last year’s edition of the Mendeleev Olympiad whereas Paul Haidu-Gerea got the silver medal.

The silver medalists this year were Cristian Robert Raclea from the Vasile Alecsandri National College in Galati and Mihnea Daniel Zoican from Sfantul Sava National College in Bucharest.

Moreover, Georgiana Sabina Firtala, a student at the Petru Rares National College in Piatra Neamt, and Raluca Darauta from Gheorghe Vranceanu National College in Bacau won bronze, according to a statement of the Romanian Ministry of Education.

The Olympiad involved three tests with an extremely high degree of complexity. Two of them were theoretical and one was practical/experimental.

A total of 120 students from 19 countries participated in the 2016 edition of the Mendeleev International Chemistry Olympiad.
