Romania’s president Klaus Iohannis will receive the Franz Werfel Human Rights Award in June for his work and commitment to human and minority rights in Romania and Europe. 

The award is offered by the German Centre Against Expulsions, and Iohannis will be the 11th laureate, according to local Agerpres. The prize, awarded every two years, includes a EUR 10,000 reward. 

The prize was first awarded on June 29, 2003. Previous laureates include former German president Joachim Gauck, Nobel Prize laureate for literature Herta Müller and historian Karl Schlögel.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Frankfurt on June 4.

The Franz Werfel Human Rights Award is named after renowned writer, poet and playwright Franz Werfel (1890 - 1945). His most famous work is the novel The Forty Days of Musa Dagh, which tells the story of the expulsion of Armenians from Turkey and the genocide of the Armenians.
