Romanian prosecutors close high treason case against prime minister

01 October 2018

The prosecutors from the Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime and Terrorism – DIICOT have decided to close the high treason case against prime minister Viorica Dancila, local News.ro reported

The prosecutors opened this case after a complaint filed by Ludovic Orban, the leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL), the main opposition party in Romania.

Orban filed his complaint in May after a visit the PM made to Israel together with Liviu Dragnea, the leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). The visit took place soon after Dragnea announced that Romania would move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and PM Dancila said the Government would analyze this. Ludovic Orban accused both Dancila and Dragnea of high treason, usurpation of authority and of refusing to inform the president on the memorandum to move Romania’s Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The DIICOT prosecutors started investigating the case in June and last week decided that there were no evidence to support the charges.
