28 June 2018

Prosecutors of the of the anti-organized crime directorate – DIICOT began an in rem (of the facts) investigation for the offense of high treason, following the complaint filed by liberal leader Ludovic Orban against prime minister Viorica Dancila, local Digi24 reported.

In May this year, Ludovic Orban filed a criminal complaint with the General Prosecutor’s Office against prime minister Dancila and social democrat leader Liviu Dragnea, accusing them of treason, revealing secret information, usurpation of authority and of refusing to inform the president on the memorandum to move Romania’s Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. He asked the prosecutors to investigate all aspects related to this memorandum. The General Prosecutor’s Office sent the complaint to DIICOT.

PSD leader Liviu Dragnea announced in April that Romania would move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, following a similar move by the US. The Government said it approved a memorandum to analyze the implications of such a decision. Dragnea and PM Dancila also made a visit to Israel and met PM Benjamin Netanyahu immediately after the announcement. President Klaus Iohannis said he wasn’t informed about this visit and accused Dragnea and Dancila of damaging Romania’s foreign relations.
