Constanta City Hall allocates EUR 3 mln for restoration of the city’s famous casino

18 February 2019

Constanta City Hall will allocate over RON 15 million (some EUR 3.1 million) for the project of consolidation and restoration of the city’s famous casino, respectively for the building’s connection to utilities and the systematization of the land.

The local councilors in Constanta adopted a decision in this sense on Friday, February 15, local Mediafax reported.

“According to the estimate, the works that are the responsibility of the municipality have a value of approximately RON 14.5 million without VAT, and, obviously, as soon as the National Investment Company will proceed with a bid, the municipality will do the same for the works to take place simultaneously,” said Constanta mayor Decebal Fagadau.

According to him, the city of Constanta and the National Investment Company have separated their competences in this project. As such, the city assumed the preservation of the casino while the National Investment Company has proceeded to a tender, a procurement procedure, aimed at hiring a specialized company to update the documentation needed for the approval of the intervention works. The tender to select the company that will be in charge of the consolidation and revamping works is to be organized in May, the mayor also said.

The casino in Constanta was built in 1910, being designed by Swiss-Romanian architect Daniel Renard in the Art Nouveau style. Although a landmark of the Black Sea shore, the building was abandoned during the 2000s, currently being in a very bad shape. The local authorities have repeatedly failed to find funding and to launch a rescue and restore operation. A third tender to renovate and consolidate the building of the casino was blocked in 2017 after it was contested by one of the bidders.
