ISIS sympathizer expelled from Romania

02 September 2016

The Bucharest Court of Appeal has declared an Iraqi citizen undesirable in Romania for 10 years, for getting involved in activities that threaten the national security.

The ruling came after the Prosecutor’s Office notified the Court of Appeal at the Romanian Intelligence Service SRI’s request.

The Iraqi citizen, identified by his initials H.R.S.H., came into SRI’s attention in 2013, shortly after arriving in Romania on a student visa. The Intelligence Service has kept him under surveillance ever since and discovered that he was carrying activities that, under the legal framework for counter-terrorism, posed risks and threats to the national security.

According to a SRI statement, the Iraqi had a radical religious profile, repeatedly showing intolerance for Westerners and Shiite Muslims. He was carrying out propaganda activities aimed at attracting co-religionists in Romania to the jihadist / DAESH ideology.

The Iraqi citizen is now in the Romanian authorities’ custody, and will be expelled from the country.

The Court of Appeal’s ruling came just two days after a Pakistani citizen was expelled from Romania for conducting activities associated with terrorism.

In mid-June this year, the Romanian authorities expelled an Afghan citizen for similar reasons.
