Romania expels Pakistani man associated with terrorist activities

31 August 2016

The Bucharest Court of Appeal has declared a Pakistani citizen undesirable in Romania for national security reasons.

The Pakistani man, identified by his initials S.A., will be expelled and will not be allowed to enter Romania for ten years.

He was staying in Romania as an applicant for a residence permit, based on his marriage with a Romanian woman, according to a statement from the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI). He came to the service’s attention late last year, when he entered Romania illegally.

SRI kept the Pakistani man under surveillance and discovered that he carried out activities that, under the legal framework for counter-terrorism, posed risks and threats to the national security.

“Specifically, the foreigner was noted for propaganda activities in the virtual environment, in the favor of several terrorist entities active in his area of origin, claiming the supremacy of the extremist Islam, instigating to global jihad while being concerned about knowing and learning how to manufacture improvised explosive devices and their components,” reads the SRI statement.

Following the Court of Appeal’s ruling, the Romanian authorities detained the Pakistani citizen and will expel him from the country.

SRI banned or expelled more than 340 people “with terrorist risk” last year.
