Code Red for flooding across three Romanian counties

14 March 2018

The National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) has issued a Code Red warning for the Buzau river, informing of a significant rise in the water level across the river’s course in the counties of Brasov, Covasna and Buzau. The rise in the water level is due to the heavy rain of the past hours, the expected rain and the melting of the snow. The warning is in place Wednesday, March 14, from 6:20 to 12:00.

A Code Orange warning was in place for the Olt river in the counties of Harghita, Covasna and Brasov until the morning of March 14. Another Yellow Code warning is valid until the evening of March 14 for 12 river basins in the regions of Oltenia, Muntenia, Transylvania and Moldova.

So far, over 70 localities in 15 counties have been affected by flooding, the Domestic Affairs Ministry (MAI) said. More than 13 homes and household annexes were impacted. The flooding impacted localities in the counties of Arges, Brasov, Buzau, Calarasi, Covasna, Dolj, Dambovita, Giurgiu, Harghita, Ilfov, Mures, Prahova, Olt, Teleorman and Vaslui. In Homorod, a locality in Brasov county, six people were evacuated preventively because water had gotten into their homes. They later returned to their houses after any danger passed. Over 3,000 firemen are currently working to support the population, the MAI said.

Two national roads, namely the DN13C, Vânători-Cristuru Secuiesc, in Mures county, and DN10, in Covasna county were blocked because of the flooding on the morning of March 14.
