Romanian restaurant group City Grill to open new restaurant in historic Bucharest neighborhood

14 March 2019

Romanian restaurant group City Grill has taken over the space of the Becker Brau beerhouse, in the capital’s Uranus neighborhood. It will open a restaurant there, following a EUR 500,000 investment.

The new venue is part of the group’s wider development plan, aimed at expanding its network in buildings or places with a history in the area of hospitality, in Bucharest and in the country.

“The group’s 2019 budget for expansion could exceed EUR 3.5 million, if the appropriate spaces are found. We are looking for venues that have the potential to become relevant for the city’s gastronomy map, or locations with a history, that we can bring back to the public’s attention, as we did with Caru’ cu Bere, Pescarus or Hanu’ lui Manuc restaurant,” Daniel Mischie, CEO City Grill Group, said.

The Becker Brau beerhouse is located on Calea Rahovei, in the historic Uranus neighborhood, inside the former beer factory of the same name. Becker Brau opened in 1996, and was the only one serving craft beer at the time. It also hosted live concerts.

The space has a surface of over 1,000 sqm and can host up to 300 people inside and 200 on the terrace.

“In the area of the old Uranus neighborhood, a cluster of restaurants with good food is emerging, and the one we will open will definitely be an attraction,” Mischie said.

The restaurant is set to open this spring, with a team of over 100 employees. City Grill currently has over 1,350 employees in its venues.

Established in 2004, City Grill operates restaurants and cafes under the brands Caru’ Cu Bere, Hanu’ lui Manuc, Pescarus, Hanul Berarilor, Trattoria Buongiorno, City Grill and City Café. In 2018, it reported a turnover of EUR 37.7 million, up 11% on the previous year.
