Over 100 cars circle Romania's Parliament Palace during “protest on wheels”

14 March 2017

Around 100 cars have participated on Tuesday evening in a different kind of protest organized in Bucharest: people drove their cars around the Parliament's Palace, honking their horns, reports local Digi24.

They’ve protested against a project initiated by Senate president Calin Popescu Tariceanu according to which the President and the justice minister are excluded from the procedure of naming chief prosecutors at the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) and the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), as well as the General Prosecutor.

According to the draft bill, the chief prosecutors would be named by the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM), reports Digi24. At present, Romania's general prosecutor, as well as his first deputy and deputy, the chief prosecutor of DNA and his deputies, prosecutors heads of departments of these Prosecutor’s Offices, and the chief prosecutor of DIICOT are named by the President at the proposal of the justice minister, with the approval of CSM.

The Senate’s Judicial Committee met on Tuesday afternoon to discuss this project, but they delayed making a decision. The Chamber of Deputies adopted the project tacitly last year.

Similar to other protests organized in Romania, this one was also organized on Facebook. Not only cars participated in the protest, but also a few bikes.
