Romania's Government freezes RCA tariffs for six months

15 September 2016

The conflict around the tariffs of the mandatory car insurance policies RCA has found a temporary resolution.

Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos announced yesterday that the RCA reference tariff would be frozen for the next six months via an emergency ordinance approved yesterday by the Government.

The measure was introduced following the road carriers’ requests. Unhappy with the high RCA tariffs, the carriers have threatened with protests. Ciolos expressed his hope that the protests would be cancelled under the new circumstances.

Road carriers have prepared for a large protest in the Victoria Square that was due for today. About 5,500 people and 5,000 motor vehicles were expected to take part at the protest.

However, four of the six organization of road carriers said that they would go on with the protests, because RCA tariffs have been frozen at levels that are too high. "The Government has announced that it wants to freeze the tariffs at RON 18,500 (EUR 4,100), but carrier organizations have been asking for a tariff of RON 4,907 (EUR 1,100)," the transporters' representatives said.

In fact, the Government hasn't mentioned the levels at which RCA tariffs would be frozen and said these would be set by the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF).

Meanwhile, the debate on RCA tariffs continued in the Parliament on Wednesday. Several MPs asked for ASF president Misu Negritoiu's resignation.
