Romanian police catch group of migrants who crossed the Danube by boat

21 September 2016

The Romanian Border Police caught on Tuesday, September 20, a group of eight migrants who entered Romania illegally after crossing the Danube River by boat.

The police detained the immigrants. Following an investigation, they discovered that the group was made of six Iraqi citizens and two Syrians aged between 4 and 33.

The migrants told the police that they left their home countries to get to Austria. They paid USD 2,000 – 3,500 per person to some guides to help them get to their destination.

The migrants followed the Turkey-Bulgaria route, and were accommodated at a hotel in Sofia. Later on, a Bulgarian citizen took them to the Danube River by car, and embarked them in two boats in which they crossed the river.

The border police have opened an investigation for illegal border crossing. The migrants will be handed over to the Bulgarian Border Police, which will also conduct an investigation in this case, under the Romanian-Bulgarian protocol.

This is not the first time when immigrants try to get to Romania by crossing the Danube River. A week ago, two people drowned when their boat capsized in the river.
