Five asylum seekers try to leave Romania illegally by taxi

12 October 2016

Five migrants from Egypt, who were asylum seekers in Romania, have found a new way of crossing the border illegally: by taxi.

The border police in Nadlac, Arad County, in Western Romania, noticed on Monday evening two taxis that were planning to leave the Arad-Nadlac A1 motorway and go around the border crossing point. The border police officers stopped the two cars for checks.

In the taxis, the police found the two drivers, who were Romanians, and five Egyptian citizens aged between 18 and 31. Following investigations, the authorities discovered that the five migrants were asylum seekers in Romania. They were trying to cross the border illegally to Hungary, on their way to Germany.

The taxi drivers told the police that they didn’t know about the Egyptian citizens' plan to cross the border illegally.

The Romanian border police have opened an investigation for illegal border crossing.
