White Night of Romanian Movies coming up this week

The ninth edition of the White Night of Romanian Movies (Noaptea Alba a Filmului Romanesc) cinema event takes place in Bucharest on Friday, September 21, in several cinemas. This year, the event will feature several new films, that haven’t been launched in cinemas yet, as well as films awarded at international festivals.

The lineup includes the newest movie by Romanian director Paul Negoescu, Povestea unui pierde-vara/The story of a slacker, with Alexandru Papadopol in the lead role, and Dragoste 1. Caine/Love 1. Dog by Florin Serban, both premieres.

Radu Jude’s newest film Imi este indifferent daca in istorie vom intra ca barbari/I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians, Romania’s proposal for the Oscars, will also be screened during the event.

Eight Romanian documentaries will be also screened at the White Night of Romanian Movies. The event will bring one documentary for the first time on the big screen, namely Popeasca, a film about the Romanian actress Stela Popescu who passed away in November 2017. The documentary is based on a collection of video excerpts from the archives of the Romanian Television and private archive of the actress, dating back from 1958 until nowadays. The documentary was directed by Stanca Radu, Stela Popescu’s niece.

The list of documentaries to be screened also includes Licu, o poveste românească/Licu, a Romanian story (by Ana Dumitrescu), Caisă/Apricot (by Alexandru Mavrodineanu), Dacii Liberi/Free Dacians (by Andrei Gorgan and Monica Lăzurean Gorgan), Fotbal infinit/Infinite Football (by Corneliu Porumboiu), România neîmblânzită/Untamed Romania (by Thomas Barton-Humphreys) and Procesul/The Trial (by Claudiu Mitcu and Ileana Bîrsan).

The screenings will take place in several locations in Bucharest, including Cinema Elvire Popesco, Cinemateca Eforie, Cinemateca Union, Rezidenta BRD Scena 9, Gradina cu Filme, Unteatru, J’ai Bistrot and Deschis Gastrobar. Entrance is free.
