Tax inspectors find 219 Romanians with undeclared revenues of over EUR 100 mln

28 June 2018

The Tax Inspection Directorate within the tax agency ANAF has completed 219 personal tax and partial income tax inspections in the period January 2017 – June 2018 and found undeclared revenues of over EUR 100 million, ANAF officials told local Hotnews.ro.

Thus, the tax inspectors set additional tax payment obligations of over RON 121 million (some EUR 26 million).

The head of the Tax Inspection Directorate said most of the 219 Romanians checked in this period were from Bucharest (28), Ilfov county (19) and Cluj (11). The average age of the verified persons was 45 years (ages 25-65), with most of them being employed in the private sector (214).

The Romanians caught with undeclared revenues tried to justify the amounts in different ways, according to the head of the Tax Inspection Directorate. Among the most common explanations for the difference between the revenues identified during the inspections and the declared income included: holding significant amounts of cash at the beginning of the period under review; loans received from various individuals (usually cash) during the period under review; repayments of loans granted prior to this period.
