World’s first robot citizen comes to Romania next year

Sophia, the humanoid robot known for being the first to receive a country’s citizenship, will come to Romania next spring to speak at a CEE business summit.

Sophia will be a speaker at the Brand Minds 2018 conference, held on May 11 in Bucharest. Other speakers include bestselling author and entrepreneur Seth Godin, Emotional Intelligence author Daniel Goleman, and leadership trainer Robin Sharma.

Sophia was developed by Hong-Kong-based Hanson Robotics. She has been designed to learn and adapt to human behavior and work with humans. Sophia is endowed with artificial intelligence, visual data processing and facial recognition. The robot imitates human gestures and facial expressions. She is also able to answer certain questions and carry simple conversations.

In October 2017, Saudi Arabia granted her citizenship, making her the first robot to have a nationality. The move generated controversy because of the country's women's rights record.
