Romania’s General prosecutor: Public sector is affected by corruption

Corruption is one of the biggest problems of the Romanian society and mainly affects public administration, education, health, and police, said Romania’s General Prosecutor Tiberiu Nitu to the Spanish newspaper El Pais. The most affected sector is the public administration.

Most of the appointments in the public sector are political, Nitu said. However, the healthcare, education and law enforcement sectors are also affected.

In the first eight months of the year, 50 teachers, 22 doctors and 41 policemen were charged for corruption, according to Nitu.

In August, 1,469 corruption cases were solved, double compared to 2014. Some 203 of the cases also received a sentence.
