Three in four Romanians suffer from economic deprivation

12 December 2017

About three in four Romanians (75.2%) suffered from one or more types of economic deprivation last year, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS).

The rate dropped between 2013 and 2015, but then increased by 0.7 percentage points last year. Compared to 2013, material deprivation declined by 3.8 percentage points.

The most common situations are those in which people declare the existence of two problems (25.5%) or the existence of a single problem (20.8%). People who have three, four or five types of economic problems represent less than a quarter of all the deprived people.

Two-thirds of Romanians (66.6%) couldn’t afford to pay for a one-week holiday last year, down 5.6% percentage points over 2013. Over half (54.5%) of Romania’s population was not able to face unpredictable situations last year, up 1.5% percentage points compared to 2013. This means that they don’t have resources to pay for these extra expenses when getting sick or facing another unforeseen problem.
