Romanian weightlifter gets eight-year doping suspension

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) suspended Romanian weightlifter Gabriel Sincraian for eight years, reports local Agerpres.

Sincraian won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics last summer, but failed a drug test and lost the medal. According to IWF, his suspension is calculated from August 12, 2016, and is due to expire on August 12, 2024.

The International Weightlifting Federation also announced that it suspended Romanian Alina-Alexandra Popovici for four years, also in a doping case. Her suspension will end on August 11, 2020.

A total of 96 athletes represented Romania at the Olympic Games organized in Rio in August 2016. The country finished 47th in the country ranking at the 2016 Rio Olympics with one gold medal, one silver, and three bronze. This was Romania’s poorest result at the Olympic Games since the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

Gabriel Sincraian failed another drug test in 2013. At that time, he was suspended from taking part in competitions for two years.
