Romanian tennis ace Simona Halep reaches Roland Garros quarterfinals

06 June 2017

Romania’s tennis star Simon Halep, who is currently number four in the WTA ranking of best women's tennis players in the world, has reached the quarterfinals of the French Open on Monday, June 5, after defeating Spanish Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-1.

“I think I played the best match here in Roland Garros against Carla, who has always been a tough opponent. I have never won against her on clay, so this was a really good match. I think I played exactly what I needed to,” Halep said after the match.

In the quarterfinals, Simona Halep will face No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina, in a rematch of the Rome final, which Svitolina won 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Halep suffered an ankle injury in that match, which seriously affected her game.

Last year, Simona Halep only made it to the Roland Garros fourth round, where she lost the match against Australia’s Samantha Stosur.

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) also opened the vote for the best dressed female player at the French Open, and Simona Halep is on the list. The other players are Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Alize Cornet, Kristina Mladenovic, Venus Williams, Garbine Muguruza, and Agnieszka Radwanska. You can cast your vote here.
