Romanian lifeguards start work for May 1 mini-break on a volunteer basis

29 April 2017

Several dozens of volunteer lifeguards will start working on the beaches of Constanta and Mamaia, at the Romanian seaside beginning May 1, Mediafax reported. Although the summer season begins on May 1, the lifeguard service is provided and paid only beginning June 1. As such, the lifeguards will be working on a volunteer basis, something that has been happening for the past few years.

“So far, some 20 volunteers confirmed their presence. Anyone available expressed their willingness. They will be on the beach, in Constanta, at Modern, but also throughout Mamaia, all the way to Navodari,” Gabi Culea, the coordinator of the Mamaia Lifeguard Service, said, quoted by Mediafax.

The lifeguards will monitor the beaches from ATVs or from dedicated watch points, and will be prepared to intervene with motorized boats. They will focus on areas with a high influx of young tourists, in the areas of clubs or where festivals are organized.

The lifeguards will also be present on the beaches of Eforie and Vama Veche, in the areas with high tourist traffic.
