The definite article is required:

-when a noun is the subject of a sentence:

Incorrect: *Carte este pe masă.

Correct: Cartea este pe masă.

-when a noun preceded by the preposition „cu” indicates the instrument, the association or the means of transportation:

Incorrect: *Scriu cu pix.

Correct: Scriu cu pixul.

Incorrect: *Merg cu prieteni la munte.

Correct: Merg cu prietenii la munte.

Incorrect: *Merg cu metrou acasă.

Correct: Merg cu metroul acasă.

-when a noun is specified by an adjective, a pronominal adjective or a phrase:

Incorrect: *Merg în parc Cișmigiu.

Correct: Merg în parcul Cișmigiu.

Incorrect: *Este frumos parc din fața casei mele.

Correct: Este frumos parcul din fața casei mele.

-when a noun is specified by a possessive adjective:

Incorrect: *Carte mea este interesantă.

Correct: Cartea mea este interesantă.

-after the quantifier „tot / toată / toți / toate”:

Incorrect: *toți oameni / *toate cărți

Correct: toți oamenii / toate cărțile.

-after the verb „to like”:

Incorrect: *Nu îmi place cafea.

Correct: Nu îmi place cafeaua.

The definite article is not used when the noun is preceded by numerals, interrogatives, demonstrative or indefinite adjectives:

Două cărți (two books)

Ce carte! (what a book!)

Câteva cărți (a few books)

Această carte / acea carte (this book / that book)

Câte cărți (how many books)

Celelalte cărți (the other books)

Aceleași cărți (the same books)

The definite article is not used after the quantifiers

„mult / multă / mulți / multe / puțin / puțină / puțini / puține”:

Multe cărți (many books)

Alte cărți (other books)
