Businessman Ioan Niculae is the wealthiest Romanian according to the Forbes billionaire list, ranked 1372nd with an estimated net worth of USD 1.2 billion.
The founder of Interagro, Romania’s leading agricultural and fertilizer conglomerate, the 59-year-old faced negative press in the fall of 2013 after state prosecutors alleged two Romanian politicians gave Interago favorable discounts on gas transfers from 2006 to 2010, reads the Forbes website.
Niculae, however, is ploughing ahead with investments in a cogeneration plant and upgrades to a Black Sea hotel property.
He also founded the Romanian Investors Council, which aims to be a leading think tank.
The father of three got his start at a state-owned agricultural company, then branched out on his own. He is an avid hunter who prefers home to travel, according to his Forbes profile.
Microsoft founder Bill Gates is back on top of the list after a four-year hiatus with his estimated net worth of USD 76 billion.
Telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helu of Mexico, who ranked first for the past four years, is second, with an estimated fortune of USD 72 billion.
Spanish clothing retailer Amancio Ortega, best known for the Zara fashion chain, retains the number three slot for a second year in a row.
