Romania and EIB sign advisory deal for three regional hospitals

06 December 2016

Romania’s Health Ministry and the European Investment Bank (EIB) signed yesterday an agreement for advisory services worth EUR 1.5 million.

Romania will get consultancy on building three regional hospitals in Iasi, Cluj-Napoca, and Craiova. The country will receive the technical assistance though the European Investment Advisory Hub (EIAH), a joint initiative by the European Commission and the European Investment Bank, which is part of the Investment Plan for Europe, also known as the “Junker Plan”.

The document is essential for launching tenders for the construction of the three hospitals, said Romanian health minister Vlad Voiculescu.

“In the last 25-35 years, very few hospitals have been built in Romania,” Voiculescu added.

The three regional hospitals will be financed with some EUR 150 million worth of EU funds. In addition to this, Romania may need another EUR 450 million for this major investment as the cost of one such regional hospital is estimated at some EUR 200 million. According to Voiculescu, the regional emergency hospitals will have up to 1,000 beds each.
