Distributor: Romanian cinema center labels second part of Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac 'prohibited for public screening'

29 January 2014

Lars von Trier's feature length movie Nymphomaniac Vol. II will not be screened in Romania after the National Cinema Center decided to label it prohibited for minors and prohibited for public screening, according to the distribution company.

The center notified the distribution company Independenţa Film by phone and should issue the official notice on January 30. The CNR however denied having banned the movie and said the distribution company wants to alert the population, according to Wall-Street.ro, quoting the head of the rating commission within CNC, Cristina Corciovescu.

The film should have been screened starting February 7. The first part of the film has been screened in Romania since January 17, classified as IM-18, prohibited for viewers under 18.

Distributor Independenţa Film, which says this censorship is unique in Europe, will appeal the decision as soon as it gets the official papers from CNC, according to Mediafax newswire.

The film was given green light for audiences above 14, 15 or 16 in various other European countries.

It is not the first time a film has been blocked by the CNC, which takes care of classifying all films screened in Romanian cinemas.

In 2008, it applied a similar label to the film Saw IV for excessive cruetly and sadism, but the distribution company appealed the decision, and CNC, after re-watching the film, allowed it for audiences above 18.

Danish director Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac is a two-part drama film released in 2013, which stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Stacy Martin, Martin Solibakke, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Christian Slater and Connie Nielsen.

The film is a drama about a woman's erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac played by Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Lars von Trier is known for his films Breaking the Waves", Dancer in the Dark, Dogville, Antichristand Melancholia.
