Romania wants to bring third car producer to the country

22 January 2018

A third car maker is interested in opening a plant in Romania, business environment minister Ilan Laufer said on Friday, without mentioning its name.

“For the ministry I run and for Invest Romania it’s a priority to try to bring the third car producer to Romania next year,” Laufer said in a press conference.

He added that the Invest Romania portfolio includes 109 investment projects worth EUR 2.5 billion. Not all of these projects have been implemented, some are only in the prospecting phase. However, they have the potential to bring EUR 2.5 billion worth of investments and create 25,000 jobs, the minister added.

Invest Romania is the state agency in charge of drawing foreign investments, which is now under the coordination of the Business Environment Ministry.

The idea of bringing another car producer to Romania, next to Renault (Dacia) and Ford, was first announced by Costin Borc, the former economy minister in the Dacian Ciolos cabinet, in 2016.
