Romania needs EUR 70 bln for transport infrastructure, can finance half

21 June 2018

The need for investments in Romania’s transport infrastructure amounts to over EUR 70 billion while the available resources for investments by 2030 are only EUR 36 billion, according to a study by Euler Hermes, quoted by Agerpres.

However, the study points out that the local transport sector is experiencing a favorable period, directly tied to the economic context and growing private consumption. Moreover, almost a quarter of Romania’s service export, which amounted to some EUR 20 billion in 2017, was generated by the transport sector. “However, infrastructure remains a major obstacle in the sector’s development and that of the economy overall,” the report points out.

The transport sector in Romania includes over 35,000 companies and individual entrepreneurs (PFA), which operate more than 180,000 vehicles and hire about 360,000 professional drivers. However, less than 100 companies operate more than 100 trucks. The transport sector in Romania is estimated at some EUR 5-6 billion.
