Romania among top candidates for uncertain OECD expansion

21 January 2019

Romania has applied for the next wave of expansion of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), alongside Bulgaria and Croatia in Europe and Argentina, Brazil and Peru in Latin America.

In an official document, minister of foreign affairs Teodor Melescanu said that he has received assurances that our country is unanimously characterized as the best prepared among the European candidates.

The minister, however, points out that a decision on the OECD enlargement is difficult to predict, given the diverging views of the organization's members on the process amplified by the tense context of the global trade relationships. Romania’s OECD membership would greatly improve its risk profile among fixed income investors, but it requires compliance with a variety of standards ranging from corporate governance to public finance management.

An official document of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed by minister Melescanu, shows that, according to the diplomatic channel signals, Romania has a solid application file that meets the evaluation criteria adopted at the OECD Ministerial Conference in 2017, and the candidacy our country meets the appreciation of the Member States and the OECD Secretariat.

“From the information available to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are currently no OECD member states that would oppose Romania’s candidacy," the ministry’s document reads.
