Romania's telecom market reaches EUR 3.4 bln in 2017

The telecom market in Romania reached RON 15.6 billion (EUR 3.4 billion) in 2017, up 6% in local currency versus the previous year.

In euro, the increase was 4%, according to data presented by the local telecom regulator ANCOM.

“Romania has one of the most dynamic telecommunications markets and this is visible in the revenue increase in this sector,” said ANCOM president Sorin Grindeanu.

He added that the total revenues on the telecom market represented 1.8% of the GDP in 2017.

Competition at the top of this market is tight, with the market leader having a share of 27% of the total revenues, the second-biggest operator has 25% and the third has 21%, according to ANCOM, which hasn’t nominated them. The remaining competitors together make 27% of the revenues.

International groups Orange, Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone hold the first three places on this market, followed by Romanian group Digi Communications (RCS&RDS), UPC Romania and Akta.
